Scripture
Psa 79:8,9,13 NLTÂ Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let Your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair. 9 Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of Your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of Your name. 13 Then we Your people, the sheep of Your pasture, will thank You forever and ever, praising Your greatness from generation to generation.
Observation
This Psalm was most likely written about the time of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple by the Babylonians. The psalmist is heartbroken at the destruction and death that has been inflicted on the Jews and their city and the Temple which once symbolized the very presence and glory of God. He acknowledges their sins and the sins of their ancestors as the reason,  but ask for mercy and compassion, not because they deserve it but only for the glory and honor of His name, especially among the nations. Once again Asaph refers to themselves as “the sheep of your pasture†and his desire to, “Thank you over and over and over. We’ll tell everyone we meet how wonderful you are, how praiseworthy you are!†(MSG). No matter what situation we face whether as a result of our own sins or those of our forefathers, or even otherwise, we can always call on the compassion and mercy of our Lord God, who is our Savior and our eternal Shepherd (see Ex 33:19; 2Cor 6:2).
