Scripture
Psa 87:5-6 ESVÂ And of Zion it shall be said, “This one and that one were born in her”; for the Most High himself will establish her. 6 The LORD records as he registers the peoples, “This one was born there.” Selah.
Observation
This Psalm is a celebration of the citizenship of the City of God, here called Zion. Zion is a hill in Jerusalem which is also called the city of David, where he built his palace and also set up the Tabernacle of David (see 2Sam 5:7,9; 6:12 etc.). In the NT it becomes a representation of the Church of Jesus Christ and its citizens. “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect.†(Heb 12:22-23 ESV). This Psalm not only celebrates those who are natural born citizens of the City of God but people from throughout the nations that will be recorded as also having citizenship along with natural born citizens. Paul explains the NT meaning of citizenship in God’s Kingdom. “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.†(Eph 2:19 ESV; see also v.12-13). This was accomplished by Christ’s redemption and by the blood of Christ. So Paul declares to the Philippians, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.†(Phil 3:20 ESV). Through Jesus Christ you can say. “This one was born there.â€
