Scripture
Psa 89:38-39 ESVÂ But now you have cast off and rejected; you are full of wrath against your anointed. 39 You have renounced the covenant with your servant; you have defiled his crown in the dust.
Observation
This is in direct contradiction to the proceeding verses. “3 You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: 4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.'” …34 I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. 35 Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David. 36 His offspring shall endure forever, his throne as long as the sun before me.†(Psa 89:3-4, 34-36). Remember the first verse of this Psalm. “I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.†(v.1) The Lord God has made a covenant and promise to David because of his heart after God (“a man after my own heart (see 1Sam 13:14; Acts 13:22). But David was a mortal man and made grievous mistakes (although he repented and returned to the Lord.) His descendants also turned from the Lord and did not return with all their heart. As a result the Lord lifted his hand of mercy for a season and it looked like he had rejected His covenant. This is what this portion of the Psalm is about. But God is a faithful God and he cannot break covenant. He speaks through his prophets repeatedly what He will do (see Isa 11:1,10 etc.). The angel declared to Mary, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.†(Luke 1:30-33 ESV)  Paul picks this up and ties it all together. “And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, even he who arises to rule the Gentiles; in him will the Gentiles hope.” 13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.†(Rom 15:12-13; see v.8-13). This is why at the end of this Psalm, even though the Psalmist does not understand or see the final outcome and sees only the contradiction, he declares anyway, “Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and Amen.†(v.52 ESV).
