Bible Vitamin

Scripture

1Ti 3:2-4 NLT  So an elder must be a man whose life is above reproach. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exercise self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home, and he must be able to teach. 3 He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money. 4 He must manage his own family well, having children who respect and obey him.

Observation

The qualifications for an elder or spiritual leader in the church are not necessarily a high level of qualifications above any other believer but most these are characteristics and virtues of a normal Christian life.  Other than the ability to teach and lead, they are the standard of what a Christian should be like. Although those in leadership should be held to a higher degree of Christ-like character, these should be what each Christian looks like.  Even Paul said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.†(1 Cor 11:1 NIV84; see also 1Cor 4:16; Phil 3:7; 2Thes 3:9; Heb 6:12).  Paul challenges all Christ-followers: “You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.†(Eph 4:22-24 NIV84)
