Scripture

Rom 3:3-4(ESV) Rom 3:3  What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? 4  By no means! Let God be true though every one were a liar, as it is written, “That you may be justified in your words, and prevail when you are judged.”

Observation

Paul has proven that not only Gentiles but Jews also have sinned and are under the judgment of God. Even though the Lord had given covenants and promises and the very Scriptures to the Jews, that does not give them any advantage in regard to the judgement of God.  Paul’s argument here is that even though God gave the Jews the Scriptures (OT), they were unfaithful and unbelieving.  However, this does not nullify the Word of God or make it any less truthful. Just the opposite, it reveals God’s righteousness and faithfulness. Paul quotes David in the Psalms, when he sinned so egregiously. God is just and true, even when David has sinned. And David recognizes that God is fully just to judge him and his sin (Psa 51:4). David says, “Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.†And then declares, “You will be proved right in what You say, and Your judgment against me is just.†(NLT). Paul thus declares, “Let God be true, and every man a liar.†(NIV84).  No matter who we are, this is where our repentance must begin. Even though David has sinned so wickedly, yet when he acknowledges God’s truth and his own sin, God is merciful and forgives his sin and restores him to right relationship with the Lord.  This does not eradicate the consequences of his sin (the baby that was born, the conflict and seeds he sowed in his family and posterity.) Here is God’s promise to us and the truth concerning repentance. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.†(1John 1:9 ESV)
