2テモテ 1:7 （新改訳SKY17）神は私たちに、臆病の霊ではなく、力と愛と慎みの霊を与えてくださいました。
（詳訳聖書）というのは、神は私たちに臆する〈臆病の、気の弱い、すくんでしまう、恐れる〉霊を与えられたのではなく、力と愛と落ち着きのある〈均衡のとれた心、〈制御心〈自制〉の〔霊を私たちに与えられたからです〕。

パウロは自分の信仰の息子テモテに、恐れに捕らわれて臆病にならないようにと励ました。パウロはローマの牢獄にいて、死刑を目前にしていました。他の者も信仰のために殉教されたり、脅迫されたりしていました。しかし、パウロは、私たちの内に宿っているのは神の霊であり、力と勢いの霊であることをテモテに思いおこさせました。旧約聖書においてヨシャパテ王とユダの人々が不可能な、圧倒されそうな状況に直面していた時に祈りました。「私たちの父祖の神、主よ。あなたは天におられる神ではありませんか。あなたはすべての異邦の王国を支配なさる方ではありませんか。あなたの御手には勢いと力があり、あなたに立ち向かえる者はだれもいません」（2歴代誌 20:6 SKY2017）。パウロはローマの信徒たちに書き送りました。「あなたがたは、人を再び恐怖に陥れる奴隷の霊を受けたのではなく、子とする御霊を受けたのです。この御霊によって、私たちは「アバ、父」と叫びます」（ローマ8:15 SKY17）。聖書の中で最もくりかえし命じられているのは「恐れるな」です（出エジプト記14:13;イザヤ41:10,13,14など参照）。恐怖は私たちを最も弱体化させ（弱者とする）、束縛させるものです。しかし、神は私たちに「力と愛と慎み（思慮分別の霊）」を与えてくださっています。ゼカリヤは神の民を思い起こさせました。「権力によらず、能力によらず、わたしの霊によって」と主は言われる」（ゼカリヤ4:6 SKY17）。イエスが天に昇られた直前に、弟子たちに最後に言われたことは「聖霊があなたがたの上に臨むとき、あなたがたは力を受けます…」（使徒の働き 1:8 SKY17）。聖霊に満たされて、力と愛と慎みの霊にうけましょう。

2Tim 1:7 (NLT) For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

(AMP) For God did not give us a spirit of timidity (of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear), but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.

Observation

Paul is encouraging Timothy, his son in the faith, to not let fear control him.  Paul is imprisoned in Rome and facing execution.  Others have been martyred for their faith and there is much intimidation.  But Paul reminds Timothy that the Spirit of God that lives in us is the God of power and might.  When Jehoshaphat had faced an impossible and overwhelming situation, he prayed, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.” (2Chro 20:6 NIV84)  Paul wrote to the Roman believers, “For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” (Rom 8:15 NIV84)  One of the most repeated commands of the Bible is, “Fear not” (see Exo 14:13; Isa 41:10,13,14 etc.)  Fear can be very debilitating and puts us in bondage.  But God has given us the Spirit “of power, love and self-discipline (or self-control).  Zechariah reminded God’s people, “‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.” (Zech 4:6 NIV84)  One of the final things that Jesus told the disciples before returning to his heavenly throne was, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…” (Acts 1:8 NIV84). Let’s be filled with the Holy Spirit which gives us “power, love, and self-disciple (self-control).
