Scripture
2Ti 2:11-13 ESV The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; 12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.
Observation
Paul reminds Timothy that God is eternal, immutable and faithful. In contrast we are weak, frail and at times unfaithful. Paul tells Timothy to remember several very important truths. We died with Christ but will also live with him for eternity because of the resurrection (see Rom. 6:5,8). In this world there is trouble, pain and difficulty (see John 16:33); but we are called to endure. Paul has said this many times, “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” (Act 14:22 NIV84; see also 2Thes 1:4-8 etc.) In times of difficulty and persecution if we deny him, he will deny us (see Matt 10:33; Luke 9:26; 12:9 etc.) Even when we fail to believe and trust God, He still remains faithful. Amplified says it this way, “If we are faithless [do not believe and are untrue to Him], He remains true (faithful to His Word and His righteous character), for He cannot deny Himself.†(see Heb 6:18; Num 23:19 etc.). He will never deny himself or fail to be faithful to His Word or His righteous character. God is always faithful (see also Rom 3:3; 2Thes 3:3 etc.) Paul tells the Thessalonians, “The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.†(1Thes 5;24 NIV84)
