ヨシュア記 11:18,23 （新改訳SKY17）　長い間にわたってヨシュアはこれらすべての王たちと戦った。23 ヨシュアはすべて主がモーセに告げられたとおりに、その地をことごとく奪い取った。ヨシュアはこの地を、イスラエルの部族への割り当てにしたがって、相続地としてイスラエルに与えた。そして、その地に戦争はやんだ。

ヨシュア記はヨシュアとイスラエルが神から約束された地を勝ち取るための戦いの記録が記されています。これは一つ二つの戦いではなく、長い戦争の時期でした（多分5-6年間）。しかし、最終的に戦い抜き、「そして、その地に戦争はやんだ」。神が私たちに約束されたことを受け取るために戦いぬき、勝ち取らなければならないものもあります。パウロはこの戦いをしばしば語っています。テモテに言いました。「信仰の戦いを立派に戦い、永遠のいのちを獲得しなさい。あなたはこのために召され、多くの証人たちの前ですばらしい告白をしました」（1テモテ 6:12 SKY17； ピリピ3:13-14; ヘブル12:1-2なども参照）。人生の終わりにさしかかって、パウロは宣言しました。「私は勇敢に戦い抜き、走るべき道のりを走り終え、信仰を守り通しました」（２テモテ 4:7 SKY17）。ヨシュアが戦った一つの敵はアなく人たちでした（民数記１３:３３も参照）。この人たちは巨人の民族でした。そして、特にヘブロンや、デビルなどイスラエルに意味のある町などを占領していました。しかし、カナンの地を勝ち取るために戦い、この巨人たちが住んでいたところからも追い出し、ガザ、ガテ、アシュドデに追いやりました（ペリシテ人の町）。何年も後にサウルとダビデの時代にイスラエルはこの巨人たちと再び戦わなければなりませんでした。カレブはこの巨人たちのことをこのように言いました。「ただ、主に背いてはならない。その地の人々を恐れてはならない。彼らは私たちの餌食となる。彼らの守りは、すでに彼らから取り去られている。主が私たちとともにおられるのだ。彼らを恐れてはならない」（民数記 14:9 SKY17）。パウロはまた言いました。「終わりに言います。主にあって、その大能の力によって強められなさい。悪魔の策略に対して堅く立つことができるように、神のすべての武具を身に着けなさい。私たちの格闘は血肉に対するものではなく、支配、力、この暗闇の世界の支配者たち、また天上にいるもろもろの悪霊に対するものです」（エペソ６:１０-１２ SKY17; １３-１８節も参照）。

Jos 11:18,23 (NIV84)  Joshua waged war against all these kings for a long time. 23 So Joshua took the entire land, just as the LORD had directed Moses, and he gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal divisions. Then the land had rest from war.

Observation

The book of Joshua is a record of Joshua and Israel’s battles and war to take possession of the inheritance that God had promised them.  It was not just one or two battles or a few easy steps.  It took a long time, probably 5-6 years.  But eventually “The land had rest from war.” We must continue to fight against those things that keep us from God’s promises.  Paul references this fight frequently, He tells Timothy, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1Tim 6:12 NIV84; see also Phil 3:13-14; Heb 12:1-2 etc.).  At the end of his life, Paul declares, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2Tim 4:7 NIV84).  One of the enemies which they fought and drove out of their land was the Anakites (see Num 13:33 etc.).  These were a race of giants that occupied their land of promise including, Hebron and Debir.  But Joshua fought and conquered the land that even were occupied by giants. They were only left in the cities of Gaza, Gath and Ashdod (territory of the Philistines.) Israel will again have to battle them in the days of Saul and David (remember Goliath?).  Even those enemies that seem to be giants here is what Joshua and Caleb said, “And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” (Num 14:9 NIV84).  “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Eph 6:10-12 NIV84 see also 6:13-18)
