今日のことば
1コリント 2:4-5 （新改訳SKY17）　そして、私のことばと私の宣教は、説得力のある知恵のことばによるものではなく、御霊と御力の現れによるものでした。5それは、あなたがたの信仰が、人間の知恵によらず、神の力によるものとなるためだったのです。

パウロが最初にコリントに来たとき、ピリピ、テサロニケ、ベレア、アテネを経てきたのです（使徒の働き16‐18参照）。ピリピでは、逮捕され、むち打たれ、牢獄に入れられました。テサロニケとベレアでは追いかけられアテネに来ました。アテネでは当時のギリシャとローマの世界の最先端の哲学者と討論し、最も哲学的に優れた福音の説明をしました（使徒の働き１７章参照）。しかし、アテネでの反応は非常に失望的でした（17：32‐34参照）。　その時のことについてパウロが言いました、「あなたがたのところに行った時の私は、弱く、恐れおののいていました」（3節 SKY17）。そこでパウロは決断しました。知恵のことばや説得あることばを断念したわけではありませんが、単純にキリストとその十字架の御業を語ることにしました。それこそが人々をとらえ、引き寄せ、変える力があると信じました。コリントの町にいた期間はパウロの生涯の働きの中で、最も効果的で、実りある時期となりました。彼はこのように説明しました。「あなたがたの信仰が、人間の知恵によらず、神の力によるものとなるためだったのです」（5節 SKY17）。前の章では宣言しました。「十字架のことばは、滅びる者たちには愚かであっても、救われる私たちには神の力です」（1:18 SKY17）。また、「ユダヤ人であってもギリシア人であっても、召された者たちにとっては、神の力、神の知恵であるキリストです」（1:24 SKY17）。ローマ人への手紙ではこう言いました、「私は福音を恥としません。福音は、ユダヤ人をはじめギリシア人にも、信じるすべての人に救いをもたらす神の力です」（ローマ1:16 SKY17）。イエス・キリストの福音のことばと十字架の御業のことばこそが人々を造り変えて、力を与えるものです。

1Co 2:4-5 (AFV)  And my message and my preaching was not in persuasive words of human wisdom; rather, it was in demonstration of the Spirit and of power; 5 So that your faith might not be in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. 
(NLT) And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. 5 I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God. 

Observation
When Paul came to Corinth, he had just come from Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea and then Athens (see Act 16-18).  He had been arrested and beaten in Philippi, chased from Thessalonica and Berea and then in Athens engaged with some of the most advanced and well know philosophers in the Greek and Roman world. His message in Athens (Acts 17) is one of the best philosophical presentation of the Gospel.  And yet the response in Athens had been very disappointing (see Acts 17:32-34). Paul says, “ And I was in (passed into a state of) weakness and fear (dread) and great trembling [after I had come] among you.”  (v.3 AMPC)  He made a decision, not to abandon wisdom and “persuasive words” but rather to simply preach Christ crucified and trust only in the power of the Holy Spirit to reach and transform lives.  His time in Corinth was not without trials and difficulties but it was one of the most fruitful and productive periods of his ministry.  His explanation was “I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.” (v.5 NLT) In the previous chapter Paul and declared, “ The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.” (1:18 NLT)  And, “But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1:24 NLT). To the Romans he had said, “For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.” (Rom 1:16 NLT)  This message of Christ and what he accomplished on the cross (“Christ crucified”) is the Power of God that will transform and empower lives.
