Scripture

Luk 23:34,43 NIV84  Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 43 Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Observation

Jesus has been betrayed, arrested, mocked, received torturous beatings, given an unjust trial, and a humiliating death sentence. And yet in his final moments as he hung on the cross, He is still full of grace and mercy.  His prayer to the Father was, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.†This is exactly what Jesus had told his followers to do, “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.†(Matt 5:44 NIV84; see also 1Pet 2:20-23)   The two other criminals who were being crucified along with Jesus also hurled insults at Jesus, but then one of them realized, who Jesus actually was and that he was without sin and yet being crucified along with them. When he cries out, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom,†(v. 42)  This was all that he needed to do to receive forgiveness of his sins and be given eternal life in paradise. Jesus answer is beautiful, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.â€Â  He would be the first one to join Jesus in Paradise, but the same is promised to any who believe. Paul testifies this way, “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.†(1Tim 1:15-16 NIV84)
