Scripture
Eze 21:2-3 (NIV84)Â “Son of man, set your face against Jerusalem and preach against the sanctuary. Prophesy against the land of Israel 3 and say to her: ‘This is what the LORD says: I am against you. I will draw my sword from its scabbard and cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.
Observation
A difficult question to answer is, why do the righteous sometime suffer along with the wicked? It is not an easy answer and ultimately only the sovereign Judge of all the earth can answer that. First, we know that the Lord God is absolutely just and righteous. He is also gracious and merciful to both the righteous and the wicked. But there are times when it seems that the righteous are entangled in God’s judgment on the wickedness of the earth. We do live in a fallen world and actually are all under the condemnation of God. In this passage the Lord warns that when the judgment comes it will “cut off from you both the righteous and the wicked.â€Â However, earlier the Lord also told Ezekiel that there would be those who escape. He would put a mark on “those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done†(Eze 9:4). Then he says, “Slaughter old men, young men and maidens, women and children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark.†(Eze 9:6). All through scripture we see that when God’s judgments are poured out, he does rescue some as in the case of Lot (see Gen 18-19). When Jesus warned about Jerusalem’s destruction, he also warned his disciples about the signs to be looking for, and that they should flee (see Matt 24). It is said that when Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D 70, there was not one Christ follower among them, they had all heeded Christ’s warning. The point is not that the righteous will always escape disaster or that the wicked will always be judged in disaster, but where our faith and trust is no matter what happens. Hebrew 11 recounts many stories of faith where God delivers his people. But it also says that there were some who “were stoned; they were sawed in two; they were put to death by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground.†(Heb 11:37-38 NIV84). Then Hebrews declares, “These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised.†(Heb 11:39 NIV84). This is where we will ultimately be judged when we stand before the Judgment Throne of God (see Rev 20:11-15).
