ローマ 2:4（新改訳SKY2017） それとも、神のいつくしみ深さがあなたを悔い改めに導くことも知らないで、その豊かないつくしみと忍耐と寛容を軽んじているのですか。
(JCB) 神がどれだけ忍耐しておられるか、わからないのですか。それとも、そんなことは気にもかけていないのですか。神があなたを罰しもせず、長いあいだ待っていてくださったのは、罪から離れるのに必要な時間を与えるためでした。神の愛は、あなたを悔い改めに導くためのものです。

常に覚えておき、同時に見なけれたならない神の面があります。それは神の正義（公正）と神のあわれみです。神はどちらかを犠牲にして他方を差し伸べることはありません。神が義なるお方です。公正な主であり、誠実（真実）なお方です。でも、同時にあわれみ深い、恵みに満ちたお方です。詩篇が言っています。「恵みとまことは　ともに会い、義と平和は口づけします」（詩篇85:10 SKY2017; 「恵みと真実は出会いました。厳正な正義と平和は口づけしました」（JCB）。主がご自分をモーセに現わされたときに宣言されました。「主、主は、あわれみ深く、情け深い神。怒るのに遅く、恵みとまことに富み、7恵みを千代まで保ち、咎と背きと罪を赦す。しかし、罰すべき者を必ず罰して、父の咎を子に、さらに子の子に、三代、四代に報いる者である」（出エジプト記 34:6-7 SKY2017）。パウロは神の親切、寛容、忍耐は私たちを悔い改めに至らせるためであると言っています。好き勝手に生きてさばきをまぬかれるためではありません（その至るのは滅びです）。神の恵みとあわれみに対する唯一の正しい応答は悔い改めであり、生き方を変えて神に立ち返るためです。そうでなければ神の怒りとさばきを待ち受けます。ペテロもこのように言っています。「主は、ある人たちが遅れていると思っているように、約束したことを遅らせているのではなく、あなたがたに対して忍耐しておられるのです。だれも滅びることがなく、すべての人が悔い改めに進むことを望んでおられるのです」（2ペテロ 3:9　ＳＫＹ2017）。

Rom 2:4 (NIV84) Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness leads you toward repentance?

(NLT) Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that His kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
(MSG) Or did you think that because he’s such a nice God, he’d let you off the hook? Better think this one through from the beginning. God is kind, but he’s not soft. In kindness he takes us firmly by the hand and leads us into a radical life-change.

Observation

There are two facets of God which we must always see together: His justice and mercy.  He does not extend one at the expense of the other.  God is righteous, just and full of truth; and yet he is also merciful, kind and gracious.  Psalms says, “Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace have kissed.” (Psa 85:10 NKJV).  When the Lord revealed himself to Moses on the mount, He declared,” And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.” (Exo 34:6-7 NIV84).  Paul tells us that the purpose and goal of the Lord’s kindness, tolerance and patience is to lead us to repentance, not to allow us to continue on in our sinful self-life that only brings destruction. The only proper and true response to God’s grace and mercy is to repent (turn from sin) into “a radical life-change.” Otherwise, the only end is God’s wrath and judgment.  Peter says it this way, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2Pet 3:9 NIV84).
