Scripture

Rom 4:3-5 (NLT) For the Scriptures tell us, “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” 4 When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something they have earned. 5 But people are counted as righteous, not because of their work, but because of their faith in God who forgives sinners.

(TPT) Listen to what the Scriptures say: Because Abraham believed God’s words, his faith transferred God’s righteousness into his account. 4 When people work, they earn wages. It can’t be considered a free gift, because they earned it. 5 But no one earns God’s righteousness. It can only be transferred when we no longer rely on our own works, but believe in the one who powerfully declares the ungodly to be righteous in his eyes. It is faith that transfers God’s righteousness into your account!

Observation

Paul again goes back to Scripture and first examples to explain his point. “What does Scripture say?†(NIV84)  This is a very important principle in understanding God and his truth.  Our faith must be firmly rooted in the Word of God which is truth (see John 17:17).  What Abraham believed God for had nothing directly to do with him being a righteous man.  Rather he simply believed that God was faithful to his word and that he would fulfill his promise (that he would have a son and descendants and that they would be as numerous as the stars in the sky.)  Then Paul uses human logic.  He explains the difference between wages and a gift.  Wages are earned by working. A gift is given gratuitously.  You cannot work for a gift. And that is what justification by faith is, a gratuitous gift. We receive it by simply trusting God and believing his word.  But although it is a free gift, “It is faith that transfers God’s righteousness into your account.†(TPT).  This truth and the example of Abraham is repeated multiple times in the NT (see Gal 3:6-8; Jam 2:23).  But Paul makes it clear that it is not just for Abraham but for us and all who believe. His conclusion is, “The words “it was credited to him” were written not for him alone, 24  but also for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.†(Rom 4:23-24 NIV84; see 2Cor 5:21).
