エゼキエル 25:12 （新改訳SKY17）　神である主はこう言われる。「エドムはユダの家に復讐を企て、復讐を果たして、咎ある者となった。

コメント
エドム人はヤコブの兄弟エサオの子孫です。ヤコブは兄エサオをだまして長子の特権を奪いました（実はエサオはそれを軽んじて、ヤコブに売り渡したのです。創世記 25:27‐34参照）。しかし、エサオは弟ヤコブを赦しませんでした。そして、必ず復讐をすると誓いました（創世記 27:41-42参照）。その憎しみは代々伝えられて、のちには国同士と争いにまで発展しました（その子供たちは個人的に何の傷もおっていなかったのに）。これが憎しみの働き方であり、自分だけではなく他の人をも汚してしまうのです。聖書はこのように教えています。「だれも神の恵みから落ちないように、また、苦い根が生え出て悩ませたり、これによって多くの人が汚されたりしないように、気をつけなさい。」（へブル12:15 SKY17）。また、聖書は教えています。「愛する者たち、自分で復讐してはいけません。神の怒りにゆだねなさい。こう書かれているからです。「復讐はわたしのもの。わたしが報復する。」主はそう言われます。」（ローマ12:19 SKY17）。私たちが相手を赦すとき、その過ちをただしたり、なくしたりするのではなく、主のみ手に委ねるとき、自分自身を汚したり、破壊するその縛りから解放するのです。

Observation
The Edomites are descendants of Esau, the brother of Jacob. Jacob deceived and stole what Esau thought was his birthright (although he actually despised it and sold it to Jacob, see Gen 25:27-34).  But Esau never forgave his brother Jacob and swore to take vengeance (see Gen 27:41-42 etc.). This hatred and bitterness was passed on from generation to generation and the Edomites and the Israelites became bitter enemies, even though the children were never personally offended. This is how hatred and bitterness works.  “See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled.” (Heb 12:15 ESV).  This is also why Scriptures teaches us, “ Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” (Rom 12:19).  Forgiveness does not make a wrong right, but rather frees us from the ravages of hatred that will destroy us.
