Scripture
1Chro 4:10 (AMPC)Â Jabez cried to the God of Israel, saying, Oh, that You would bless me and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and You would keep me from evil so it might not hurt me! And God granted his request.
(NKJV)Â And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” So God granted him what he requested.
(NLT) He was the one who prayed to the God of Israel, “Oh, that you would bless me and expand my territory! Please be with me in all that I do, and keep me from all trouble and pain!†And God granted him his request.
Observation
Chapter 1-9 of 1Chronicles is mostly genealogies. It can be hard to read but there is a reason God has put it in the Bible. It shows God’s faithfulness through the generations and that God fulfills his promises even when it takes generations. The Gospel of Matthew opens with a list of genealogies (also seen in the Gospel of Luke ) that summarize one of the main reasons for why God puts them in the Bible; that is to show the genealogy of Jesus and how God fulfill the many prophesies of the Messianic line. That is why Matthew begins, “A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham.†(Matt 1:1 NIV84). But in the middle of these very boring lists of names is a remarkable story. It is so amazing that God stops the list of generations of names in Judah’s lineage and says, “Jabez was more honorable than his brothers.†(1Chr 4:9 NIV84). Even though he was born into such a difficult situation that his mother named him “Pain†saying, “I gave birth to him in pain.†(v.9), yet Jabez did something that so grabbed God’s attention, that he stops the narrative and tells what he did. Jabez did not let his circumstances or family environment keep him from asking for and receiving God’s blessing. He prays, “Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.” (NIV84). God was so pleased with this prayer that is says, “And God granted his request.†(NIV84). This is the promise that John writes, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.†(1John 5:14-15 NIV84).
