Scripture

1Ch 11:22,25 (NIV84)  Benaiah son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, who performed great exploits. He struck down two of Moab’s best men. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 25  He was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

Observation
Benaiah (son of Jehoiada, the priest, see 1Chro 27:5-6 etc.) is listed among the Thirty of David’s mighty men.  Some of his exploits are listed here, he struck down two of Moab’s greatest heroes (lion-like) men, he kills a lion in a pit on a snowy day, he kills an Egyptian giant with his own spear (v.23). But the most amazing thing about Benaiah was his faithfulness and loyalty.  David trusted him so much that he put him in charge of his personal bodyguard (secret service). At the end of David’s life and reign there were several attempted coups by his own sons but through it all Benaiah stays faithful to David and ultimately to Solomon (see 1Kings 1:8,38 etc.) And he is rewarded by becoming the top army commander under Solomon (see 1King 2:35; 4:4). Faithfulness is one of the qualities that God most honors. “Well done, good and faithful servant.†(Matt 25:23 NIV84) Paul tells the Corinthian church, “It is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.†(1Cor 4:2 NIV84). In the midst of all that happens in the Book of Revelations, it says, “This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God’s commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.†(Rev 14:12; see also Rev 17:14). Here is God’s promise in Psalms to the faithful. “To the faithful you show yourself faithful…†(Psa 18:25 NIV84; see also Psa 31:23; 37:28; 97:10; 101:6 etc.).
