ダビデが王となって、最初にしたことは神の臨在を象徴する契約の箱を探し出して、もて帰ってくることでした。これは神の臨在に対するダビデ王の心を現しています。また民も一緒に応答しました。神がモーセに幕屋を造るように言われた時にこのように言いました。「彼らにわたしのための聖所を造らせよ。そうすれば、わたしは彼らのただ中に住む。」（出エジプト記 25:8 SKY17）。幕屋全体が神の家として神が人間の間に住む場所となりました。契約の箱は幕屋の中心で心臓部でした。神の臨在がありありと現れる場所でした。「ケルビムの上に座しておられるイスラエルの神、万軍の主よ。ただ、あなただけが、地のすべての王国の神です。あなたが天と地を造られました。」（イザヤ 37:16 SKY17；詩篇80:1も参照）。大祭司エリの時代に契約の箱はペリシテ人によって奪われました。その後イスラエルに戻されましたがモーセの幕屋には返されませんでした（1サムエル 4-6章参照）。それからサウル王の時代が起こり、このように書かれています。「私たちは、サウルの時代には、これを顧みなかったから。」とあります。でも、神は言われました。「しかしそこから、あなたがたがあなたの神、主を探し求め、心を尽くし、いのちを尽くして求めるとき、あなたは主にお会いする。」（申命記 4:29 SKY17；イザヤ 55:1も参照）。ダビデはこの神の臨在を慕い求めて、契約の箱を探し出し持って帰ってくることを決めました。ダビデは詩篇の中で神の臨在に対するその心を現しています。「一つのことを私は主に願った。それを私は求めている。私のいのちの日の限り　主の家に住むことを。主の麗しさに目を注ぎ　その宮で思いを巡らすために。」(詩篇 27:4 SKY17)

1Ch 13:3-4 NIV84  Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not inquire of it during the reign of Saul.” 4 The whole assembly agreed to do this, because it seemed right to all the people.

Observation
The first thing that David does as King of Israel is to bring back the Ark of the Covenant.  This shows his heart and desire for the presence of God and the response of the people was in agreement. When the Lord told Moses and the people of Israel to build a tabernacle, He said, “And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them.” (Exo 25:8 NKJV).  The whole tabernacle was part of dwelling among men. But the Ark of the Covenant (Ark of Testimony) was the very heart of the Tabernacle and specifically the place where God’s presence was revealed, “O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.” (Isa 37:16 NIV84; see also Psa 80:1). Earlier during Eli’s time (before the time of King Saul) the Ark of God had been captured by the Philistines but then returned to Israel (see 1Sam 4-6). But it was never returned to the Tabernacle and not at the center of Israel. This passage tells us, “we did not inquire of it (the Ark) during the reign of Saul.” The Lord has said to Israel, “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deut 4:29 NIV84) David desires to have God’s presence at the center of their lives and determines to bring the Ark of God back into their lives. This is the first step.  Isaiah tells us, “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near.” (Isa 55:6 NIV84).  Here is what David said in one of his Psalms, “One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple.” (Psa 27:4 NKJV)
