(English following)

Scripture
1Chro 19:1-3 (NLT) Some time after this, King Nahash of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun became king. 2 David said, “I am going to show loyalty to Hanun because his father, Nahash, was always loyal to me.” So David sent messengers to express sympathy to Hanun about his father’s death. But when David’s ambassadors arrived in the land of Ammon, 3 the Ammonite commanders said to Hanun, “Do you really think these men are coming here to honor your father? No! David has sent them to spy out the land so they can come in and conquer it!”
Observation
Have you ever had good intentions misunderstood? It is a very painful experience. Not only were David’s emissaries misunderstood they were greatly humiliated. What could have been resolved by dialog and humility escalated to war; because the Ammonites refused to acknowledge their mistake, take steps to reconcile; the result was a crushing defeat. Jesus talked about reconciliation. “When you are on the way to court with your adversary, settle your differences quickly. Otherwise, your accuser may hand you over to the judge, who will hand you over to an officer, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 And if that happens, you surely won’t be free again until you have paid the last penny.” (Matt 5:25-26 NLT; see also Pro 17:14; 25:8 etc.). There are times to stand your ground but the first step and response should always be towards reconciliation, but this also takes humility. Pride will always ultimately lead to destruction. “Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Pro 16:18 NKJV; see also Pro 11:2; 18:12; 29:23 etc.)
