(English following)

Scripture
1Ch 21:13-14 (AMPC)  And David said to Gad, I am in great and distressing perplexity; let me fall, I pray you, into the hands of the Lord, for very great and many are His mercies; but let me not fall into the hands of man.14 So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel, and there fell of Israel 70,000 men.

Observation
David’s sin has far reaching consequences. Sometimes we tend to think our choices and sin will only affect ourselves but sin always goes beyond what we think.  Even though David repents and asks for God’s mercy, many people all through Israel suffer as a result.  David knows the Lord God well enough that the best and safest place to be even in judgement is in the hands of the Lord God.  The Lord is a just God and must punish and deal with sin.  But David also knows that He is a merciful and gracious God. The Lord opens David’s eyes to see into the spirit realm of what is happening. David and the elders have put on sackcloth to humble themselves before the Lord. Then they see the Angel of the Lord, and bow facedown to the ground.  How long the plague has already been going is unclear; book of Samuel records that the plague has gone from Dan to Beersheba (see 2Sam 24:15) but the Angel of the Lord is about to devastate Jerusalem.  However, when the Lord sees David’s repentance and humbling himself He does extend mercy and commands the Angel of the Lord to stop.  David accepts full responsibility and asks that he alone who bear the judgement.  James tells us, “ Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom.10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” (Jam 4:8-10 NKJV).  As we will see, the Lord will show David how to make atonement and even reveal much more even about the Temple.
