Scripture
1Chro 24:3,5 (NIV84) Then David with Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, divided them according to the schedule of their service. 5 Thus they were divided by lot, one group as another, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of the house of God, from the sons of Eleazar and from the sons of Ithamar.

Observation
Although David was not allowed to actually build the Temple, the House of the Lord, he did much in the preparation by gathering much building material and also by setting up the organizational structure for the ministry in the Temple (Remember that one the key themes of the books of Chronicles is the Temple and Israel’s relationship to it.)  Here we see David, working with the leading priests Zadok and Ahimelech, to organize the priests into 24 divisions to take their time of ministry in the Temple of the Lord.  A thousand years later in the New Testament time, they still followed this divisional order,  when Zacharias of the order of Abijah ministered before the Altar of Incense. (see Luke 1:5,8; compare with 1Chr 24:10). God is the God of order and Paul also tells us in the church, “Let all things be done decently and in order.” (1Cor 14:40 NKJV).  Although we want the free moving and leading of the Holy Spirit, we also need order.
