(English following)

Scripture
Amo 1:9,11 (NIV84) This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Tyre, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath… 11  This is what the LORD says: “For three sins of Edom, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath.

Observation
This expression is repeated 8 times in Amos 1-2.  It is an idiomatic expression meaning, “sins have piled up beyond the point of endurance”, or “they have done it again and again—more than enough.” Although the Lord has promised that all sin and transgressions will be judged and punished, many times it seems that because there is no immediate resulting punishment, and so people go on perpetuating their sinful life style (see Ecc 8:11 etc.).  But we are warned, “Because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed.” (Rom 2:5 NIV84; see also 1Thes 2:16).  So why does the Lord God not judge and punish sin immediately and bring justice?  Peter tells us, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2Pet 3:9 NIV84).  Rather than continuing to pile up our sins, let’s repent and turn back to the Lord sooner rather than later. Amos is showing that God is consistent and treats all men the same; whether it is Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, Moab or Judah and Israel, the Lord God will hold them all accountable for their sin unless they repent and turn to the Lord for His mercy and grace.  Hebrews admonishes us, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts …” (Heb 3:15 NIV84). And Paul tells us, “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. “ (2Cor 6:2 NIV84).
