Scripture
Eze 26:3-4 NIV84Â therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, O Tyre, and I will bring many nations against you, like the sea casting up its waves. 4 They will destroy the walls of Tyre and pull down her towers; I will scrape away her rubble and make her a bare rock.
Observation
Tyre was a major city and economic center of the ancient world. At times it was even friendly to Israel and Jerusalem. Hiram, King of Tyre was very helpful to both David and Solomon when they built their palaces, and also in the building of the Temple of Solomon (see 2Sam 5:11; 1Ki 5:1; 2Chro 2:3,11 etc.). However, they were not only a city of commerce but of great idolatry. Eventually they turned against Israel and Jerusalem and here we see that they rejoiced and hoped to make financial gain from Jerusalem’s downfall (see v.2). The Lord God was not pleased with their attitude and declares that He would bring “many nations against you.†Tyre was not immediately and completely destroyed at once, but subsequent nations and kingdoms (Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome etc.) and ultimately the judgment of the Lord was fulfilled so that today, even though there is a small village on the ancient location inhabited by some poor fisherman, the prophecy has come true, “…make her a bare rock…a place to spread fishnets…†(v. 4-5). Jesus mentions Tyre along with its neighboring city Sidon, saying that the cities of Israel would receive harsher judgment than Tyre and Sidon because they did not respond to the message of the Gospel of Jesus (Matt 11:21-22; Luk 10:13-14 etc.). Even though God’s judgment is delayed, it will certainly be executed. Peter warns in his letter that God’s delays are not unfaithfulness to is promises both of his return and of judgment (see 2 Pet 3:3-8). Then Peter declares, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.†(2Pet 3:9 NIV84). God’s patience is an expression of His mercy, but we must also remember He is coming to judge the earth. “For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the peoples with His truth.†(Psa 96:13 NKJV).Â
